Get Started
5 weeks Thursday 25 September-23 October, 10am-12pm or 6 November-4 December, 2-4pm

Are you confused by how to use your computer? Learn step by step the basics of computing, including making sense of Windows, opening, creating and saving documents and much more. A chance to ask questions and become more confident.
No previous computing experience is required.

The Next Steps

Still consider yourself a beginner but want to learn some more skills on the computer? This course will continue on from Get Started and help you learn more features in Word like tables and templates and how to create interesting documents with ease. Try some of the different programs on your computer like Paint and Excel.
You should have already completed a beginner's computing course.

Internet
5 weeks Tuesday 23 September-21 October, 10am-12pm

Find your way around the Internet, have help with online shopping, forms, booking tickets and finding information. Ideal if your only experience has been a free UK online library session as this course follows on.
You should already have basic computer skills i.e. use a mouse and be familiar with the keyboard.

Email & Attachments
5 weeks Tuesday 4 November-2 December, 10am-12pm

Come and 'play' then decide if this modern phenomenon would ever do for you!
Learn how to send and receive attachments, including photos. Preferably you will have access to Outlook Express to practise at home.
You should already have basic computer skills i.e. use a mouse and be familiar with the keyboard.

Keep Fit for Computers

For a healthy computer, come and enhance its smooth running by learning about preventative measures, including use of system tools and how to get rid of a software program. Maximising the space on your PC can make a huge difference to its speed and reliability.
You should have already completed a beginner's computing course.

Cards, Calendars & Present Labels
5 weeks Thursday 6 November-4 December, 1-3pm

This course will show you some simple hints on how to create your own cards, present labels and place settings, and make a calendar! Using Microsoft Word and / or Publisher 2003 you can create your own individual style in time for Christmas.
You should already have basic computer skills i.e. use a mouse and be familiar with the keyboard.

Address Labels
1 day Thursday 30 October, 10am-12pm

Are you tired of writing all those addresses on the envelopes of your cards and letters? This session will help you create a list of your addresses using Word 2003 and print address labels.
You should already have basic computer skills i.e. use a mouse and be familiar with the keyboard.

Scanning
1 day Tuesday 7 October, 2-4pm

You can use a scanner to scan images such as photos, maps or children's drawings and save them to your computer. Once scanned, these images can be emailed to family or friends or inserted into any documents that you might be creating. Software varies, but this workshop will give you a general introduction to scanning. You should already have basic computer skills i.e. use a mouse and be familiar with the keyboard.

Free Phone Calls using Skype
2 days Thursday 13 & 20 November, 10am-12pm

Learn how to reduce your telephone bills by using the Internet to send and receive calls or instant messages. You will also find out how to set up Skype, which is a program enabling you to call or send instant messages to your family and friends for free - anytime, anywhere in the world as long as they have Skype on their computer, broadband Internet and a headset or Internet phone.
You should already be able to use the Internet fairly confidently and have basic computer skills i.e. use a mouse and be familiar with the keyboard.

Digital Photography

Digital Cameras
5 weeks Friday 26 September-24 October or 7 November-5 December, 2-4pm

Digital cameras? Too technical? Resolution, memory cards, CCDs and LCDs mean nothing? Are downloading images, creating slideshows, prints and email attachments just wild dreams? Find your way around your camera, at your speed, in your Club.
No previous experience is required.

Selections using PhotoShop Elements
3 weeks Friday 3-17 October, 9.30am-12.30pm

Take out images from your photos and set them into another background, eventually combining several selections into one picture, which you are sure to find fascinating and even amusing. As a fun way of putting your new skills into practice, you will then create your own James Bond Escape with you in the picture!
This short course follows on from Editing Digital Photos using PhotoShop Elements. It will be assumed that you fully understand the basic enhancement tools.

Creating a Photo Album using PhotoShop Elements
1 day Friday 24 October, 9.30am-1pm

Want a mini booklet with favourite snaps from a recent holiday or from any other memorable occasion which you'd like to remember? Or perhaps send it to a person who was there or to even someone who couldn't get there? You will be shown how to fit your pictures on to several pages, and bind them into a fancy cover to produce an album with all your notes and comments. Find out how to put on different edges and backgrounds with captions and notes. There will not be enough time to print your work, but if you bring a USB memory stick, you can save the work to print at home.
You will be expected to bring your own images to arrange, and to know your way around Photoshop Elements well enough to size those images and select them accurately.

Editing Digital Photos using PhotoShop Elements
5 weeks Friday 7 November-5 December, 10am-12.30pm

This hands-on course will teach beginners some of the important features in PhotoShop Elements Version 3. Learn how to download images, especially from cameras, adjust their quality and prepare them for print or email. Progress to selecting parts of an image, transferring the selections into other backgrounds and using layers to ease manipulation.
You should already have basic computer skills i.e. use a mouse and be familiar with the keyboard. It is important that you have at least Photoshop Elements Version 3 on your home computer so that you can practise between classes.

Portraits
1 day Friday 12 December, 9.30am-1pm

Find how to take good portrait photos in natural light or with flash. Learn how to set up your digital camera, pose the sitter, consider the best light directions, use reflectors, choose a suitable background, and keep a good rapport with your sitter. Benefit from practical work to consolidate the theory.
You should ideally have already attended a Digital Cameras course.

Family History

Beginners - Back to 1837
2 days Friday 3 & 17 October, 10am-4pm

Starting to research your family tree? Join Jane Ferentzi-Sheppard, an experienced family historian, and learn how to research back to 1837 using Civil Registration and Census records. Find out about Local Record Offices, Family History Societies and relevant books and magazines. Learn how to use online resources.
No previous family history experience is required, but you should already have basic computer skills i.e. use a mouse and be familiar with the keyboard.

Trace your Ancestors Online for Beginners

Learn how to begin to search websites for your ancestors back to 1837. Basic mouse and keyboard skills are required.

Intermediate - Pre-1837 Records
2 days Friday 21 & 28 November, 10am-4pm

This second course will show you how to trace your family to pre-1837 using Parish records. Find out about wills, probate records and old newspapers and photos. Learn how to organise your research work and use online resources.

Advanced Research

This course is for experienced family historians who want to find ancestors in the 18th and early 19th Centuries using various sources, including Militia records, Land Tax, Poll Books, estate and manorial papers, maps, trade directories and Quarter Session records.

Looking at Military Records

Do you have ancestors who fought in the armed services, including the Merchant Navy? Find out where to look to find them, how to access the records, what they tell you, and how to use them in your family history research. Bring along your own military research.

French

Get By in French
8 weeks Monday 29 September-24 November, 10.30am-12pm

This course, although not for complete beginners, will enable you to practise and extend your French in a friendly, informative and progressive way. Largely orally based, we will look at social interaction, travel, accommodation, eating, shopping, health and various services. Grammar, where appropriate, and current affairs may also be included. Discover more about France, the culture and the language.
