Wednesday 10th 10am
1. Recycling Talk & Visit
An introduction to the 3 Rs in East Dorset - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Ever wondered why there is so much media coverage about waste? This talk will help explain the different issues surrounding the 3 Rs, from real nappies to SMART shopping, and why each aspect is so important. It will be followed by a visit to the Recycling Centre (MRF) and Composting Centre (ECO) at Bournemouth Airport. Minibus available for visit.

Tuesday 16th 8.45am
2. Minibus Visit to Laverstoke Park, Overton
Clare and Jody Scheckter came to Laverstoke Park in 1996 with the aim of farming to produce the healthiest, best-tasting food without compromise. Organic standards are viewed as a minimum on this 2,500 acre 'smallholding' and the attention to animal welfare is exceptional. Slower-growing, traditional and rare breeds are raised outdoors and for much longer than animals on conventional farms. This guided, minibus tour will call in at the composting yard, chickens, pigs and wild boar, the dairy for cattle and water buffalo and the walled garden.

3. A Walk through 17th Century Dorchester Talk

A 1613 pamphlet described Dorchester as, 'One of the principall places of traffick for westerne merchants, by which means it grew rich and populous…' Using primary and secondary sources, we will take an illustrated walk through early 17th Century Dorchester and discover how its people affected and were affected by national events, as well as the vagaries of everyday life.

Thursday 25th 2pm
4. Dorset's Heroines Talk
David Beaton, author of Dorset's Forgotten Heroes, reveals the remarkable lives of women who have inspired the inhabitants of Dorset over many hundreds of years, ranging from examples of bravery in The English Civil War to a Dancer in World War II.

Thursday 2nd 2pm
5. The Manor Houses of Dorset Talk
Audrey Grindrod and Una Russell's book covers the history of 75 Manor Houses and the families who lived in them. Their talk will reveal how the idea began, with stories of the Houses and amusing incidents during the seven years it took to visit and research them.

6. Bonsley Common and Beyond Walk

A 5 mile circular walk with some hills, but not too physically demanding, including a visit to The Dorset Coppice Group's 'Living Classroom' where ancient woodland traditions and skills are practised.

7. Visit to National Oceanography Centre & Solent Sky
a) National Oceanography Centre
The Centre is the UK's focus for oceanography and has a waterfront campus on Southampton's Empress Dock. It also houses the Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology.
b) Solent Sky
The Museum tells the story of 26 aircraft companies, the largest flying boat operation in the world and the legendary Spitfire, which was designed in Southampton.

8. Dorset's Hidden Histories Talk
Exploring 400 years of the presence of black people in Dorset. Louisa Adjoa Parker talks about the research for her recent book which is part of the Black History in Dorset project. 'Black history is about telling hidden or forgotten histories of people with African, Caribbean or Asian heritage who have been ignored by historians…'

An 8 mile walk to include Winterborne Came, Whitcombe and Stinsford whose churches are connected with William Barnes and Thomas Hardy.

10. Cerne Abbas Walk

A 9 mile hilly walk to include Nether Cerne, Godmanstone, and

11. Visit to Philipps House & Dinton Park
A guided tour of Jeffry Wyatville's neo-Grecian house completed in 1820, a few years before he designed Allendale House. Set in recently restored parkland with an impressive collection of Regency furniture.

12. The Real Thing? Art, Heritage & Authenticity Talk
Our enjoyment of experiencing objects, buildings, landscapes, food and drink is influenced by whether we think they are natural, genuine or original. Peter Oakley's talk explores how and why we judge objects to be authentic or just fakes or substitutes, including examples from southwest England, Hawaii and New Mexico.

13. QE - A New Sustainable School Talk

Headteacher Andy Puttock will explain how the new School has been designed and is being built and managed in a completely different way to before. It will feature sustainable technologies and materials, and a Sustainability Resource Centre serving the wider community as well as the School.

Monday 1st 2pm
14. The Digby Family Talk
The first in a Local History series Jane Ferentzi-Sheppard about Dorset families and their houses. Sherborne Castle has been the home of the Digby family since 1617 and Minterne House since 1768. We will look at aspects of the family and their connections to Dorset, including an Admiral serving with Nelson and two ladies who caused quite a stir in their day.

15. Climate Change & Wimborne - Past and Future Talk
An illustrated talk by George Green of the Environment Agency who will examine the evidence of climate change over the past 20 or so years and identify the challenges we face over the next 20 years.

Advance Bookings
Tickets must be paid for within one week of the initial booking. Failure to pay in full before the deadline will lead to the tickets being re-issued.

Postal bookings
Please enclose an SAE with any postal bookings. Tickets will not be issued by post without an SAE.

Cancellations
If you are unable to attend, please notify us immediately. It is your responsibility to re-sell the ticket(s) if you wish to do so.

Refunds
We do not issue cash refunds for unused tickets.

Meeting points for all external events are listed on the tickets.

Minibus
Whenever possible EDHT, courtesy of East Dorset District Council, provides a minibus for those who do not have transport to attend external events. Places are very limited. If you cannot attend, please notify us immediately. EDHT cannot guarantee a minibus for every event.

Walks
EDHT can take no responsibility for the conditions or duration of any of the walks in the programme. All participants should wear appropriate walking shoes and clothing and bring a packed lunch.
