Poole Guildhall, a two-storey brown brick
building designed in “Palladian taste” style, and
enhanced with lime stone dressing, was built in
the coronation year of King George III (1761) to
house the administration prescribed by Queen
Elizabeth I who made Poole a county separate
from Dorset.
The building has been considerably adapted
but externally the alterations have been
sympathetic and the elegant front elevation has
been retained. The elegant Hall of Justice with
its judicial bench remains intact and is now a
wedding hall.
The Society For Poole will be hosting a viewing
for Heritage Week with presentations in the Main
Hall every half hour.

Last year, Cotness Cottages in Creech were
virtually destroyed in a devastating fire. Despite
the damage, much of the fabric remained and
the Listed structures were reconstructed using
traditional and modern techniques. Morgan
Carey Architects will provide a short explanation
of the work involved and this is a great
opportunity to see some craftsmanship in the
repaired dwellings. One of the cottages will be
open to see inside.

The pillbox, built in 1940 at the time of
threatened invasion of England by the German
Army, is the only accessible pillbox remaining in
Blandford. It is positioned above an anti-tank
ditch converted from a ‘ha-ha’ (a unique feature
in England) and the whole site was recently
granted Grade II listing. This defensive position
was vital to the defence of Blandford which
had been designated as a “strong point” along
the line of the River Stour. A model of these
1940 defences encircling Blandford, including
this pillbox, is on display in the Blandford Town
Museum
Steep and narrow steps. Low doorway. Tin hats provided.
Beware of falling into the ha-ha ditch or the deep pond.

The Victorian pumping station was designed by
Thomas Hawksley the eminent water engineer.
The Listed (Gr.II) Turbine House dates from
1856/57 and was Weymouth’s first pumped
water supply. In 1869 a second pumping station
was built to accommodate steam power and in
1882 and 1899 further extensions were added to
house extra pumping capacity.
