Work is currently underway on ‘Unlocking the
Bankes Archive’, a project funded by Heritage
Lottery Fund to support the cataloguing and
conservation of this internationally significant
archive. This guided walk will look at the
influence that the Bankes family have had on
the village of Corfe as we attempt to answer
some of the questions posed by the archive. Just
why did John Bankes buy up so much property
in Corfe Village in the 1760s and 70s? What
were the cottages on the ‘waste’? We also look
at the plans and drawings made by William
John Bankes, a favourite of Queen Victoria, as
he sought to restore the castle in the early 19th
century.
