Highcliffe Castle is a Grade I listed mansion
situated on the cliff top with spectacular views
across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Built by
distinguished diplomat Lord Stuart de Rothesay
in the early 1830’s, it remained a family home
until the 1950’s. Its romantic Gothic Revival style
is largely due to the medieval masonry shipped
from France. The 9 metre high ‘Jesse Window’
is made from French medieval stained glass,
the central panel believed to have come from
a church in Rouen. Two devastating fires in the
1960’s rendered the building derelict. In 1977 it
was purchased by Christchurch Borough Council
and a programme of repairs was begun with the
support of English Heritage and the Heritage
Lottery Fund
There will be free entry to the heritage rooms for
anyone unable to get tickets for the tours.
Wednesday 12th, 10.30am to 6pm.
