A 1613 pamphlet described Dorchester as, "One of the principall places of traffick for westerne merchants, by which means it grew rich and populous….maintained with a wise and civill government to the well deserving commendation of her inhabitants." But, what preoccupied the minds of the ordinary inhabitants of Dorchester? Using primary and secondary sources to guide us, we will take an illustrated walk through early 17th century Dorchester and discover how its people affected and were affected by great national events, as well as glimpsing the trials and tribulations, some tragic, some humorous, that made up the vagaries of everyday life at that time.
